They were involved with construction projects such as the Tower City Center, the Cleveland Public Library, and the home to the Cleveland Indians - Progressive Field.After college, Whitley moved to California and began her career as a teacher in Compton until she could get an assistant job at Arsenio Hall. Whitley also began dancing on the show "Soul Train." Her first big break came in 1989 when she was cast in the lead role of Shelly Garrett's cult play "Beauty Shop" which premiered in Los Angeles and then traveled across the United States.
